The Strategic Positioning of the Institute of High Energy, Chinese Academy of Sciences is one of the leading international research centers for high-energy physics, and is the backbone of China's large-scale scientific facilities. It has a series of large-scale scientific facilities, including the operating Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC)/Beijing Spectrometer (BESIII)/Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility (BSRF), China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), and Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope Satellite (HXMT, Huiyan); High Altitude Cosmic Ray Observatory (LHAASO); Huairou-1 Polar Satellite (GECAM).
HEPS is one of the ten major scientific and technological infrastructure projects identified in the 13th Five Year Plan for the construction of national major scientific and technological infrastructure. It is an important support platform for original and breakthrough innovative research in the fields of basic science and engineering science.
HEPS is a high-performance high-energy synchrotron radiation light source with an electronic energy of 6 GeV and emittance of 0.06 nm × rad or less. It is mainly composed of accelerator, beamline and experimental station. After the optimization design and application of the latest technology in the preliminary design and research stage, including the key technologies that have achieved breakthroughs in the high-energy synchrotron radiation light source verification device (HEPS-TF), HEPS is not only internationally advanced, but also suitable for China's national conditions. Its main performance indicators rank in the forefront of the world, with the highest spectral brightness in the world, higher than the current world's existing and ongoing or upcoming light sources, and there is still room for further improvement. HEPS started construction on June 29, 2019 at Huairou Science City, and the beamline station is planned to gradually start light debugging in early 2024 and undergo acceptance in 2025.
